Managing your time, reading the situational questions, not neglecting a topic… The most common civic-exam mistakes, and how to avoid them.

At the civic exam, most failures don't come from a lack of knowledge but from avoidable mistakes. Here are the main ones — and how to avoid them.

1. Mismanaging your time

You have 45 minutes for 40 questions — a little over a minute each. Don't get stuck: skip the hard questions and come back to them at the end.

2. Reading the question too fast

The situational questions (12 of the 40) require careful reading. Spot the keywords ("not", "except", "mandatory") before choosing your answer.

3. Neglecting a topic

The questions cover five topics. Revising only your strong points leaves gaps: practise each with our quiz by topic.

4. Confusing language level and civic exam

These are two separate conditions: passing the civic exam does not replace proving your French level (A2, B1 or B2 depending on the permit). Learn more.

5. Waiting until the last minute

Passing is a condition for your permit or naturalisation application: prepare ahead of time to avoid any delay.
